Implementing Energy-efficient Technology to Support a Large-Scale Decarbonization Project

As companies in the Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario reconfigure their energy systems to reduce carbon emissions, Springbank Mechanical Systems has been a trusted partner in optimizing commercial HVAC systems to support decarbonization projects.

We believe technology is the key to making business operations more sustainable, reducing a company’s environmental impact while saving money through decreased energy bills, fewer maintenance calls, and longer equipment life.

“Our approach to optimizing commercial HVAC systems to help customers reach their decarbonization goals is simple: we discuss their goals, inspect their system, and make recommendations that use the latest advanced technology. We’re also passionate about the environment at Springbank, and ensure we recommend solutions that yield the best results.”

The Project: Decarbonizing Multiple HVAC Systems

Our customer, a global real estate investment, operating, and development company with multiple locations in Southern Ontario, began a decarbonization project that necessitated reviewing and upgrading many of their energy-based utilities.

The Springbank team held a discovery call with the customer before visiting the four sites that required system optimization. We learned all about the company’s needs and goals and inspected its HVAC systems, which were driven by two rooftop units (RTUs) at each location.

These collaborative meetings gave our team the insights required to produce a detailed, easy-to-understand quote that clearly outlined our recommendations, timelines, and costs to fulfill the customer’s needs.

Springbank’s Recommendations

We presented a list of recommendations to the customer that will help support their decarbonization project, which included:

  • Removing the eight existing rooftop HVAC units from across their four locations
  • Installing new rooftop dual fuel or fully electric heat pump systems, depending on the location and system configuration
  • Connecting the new units to a specially designed decarbonization Building Automation System (BAS) program with a visual dashboard that helps them measure carbon emissions

The customer approved the recommendations and quote, prompting the Springbank team of qualified, licensed technicians to get started. We ensured that an on-site supervisor was always available to answer our customer’s questions and scheduled installation and commissioning to suit the customer’s convenience.

The Results: Optimized Energy-efficiency and a Strategic Plan for the Future

When commissioning new technology, our services include training our customer’s technical team on how their new energy-efficient system operates. In this case, we ensured that the teams covering all four locations were equipped with the knowledge they needed to use the BAS software that controls their HVAC system.

We also demonstrated how to use the real-time data provided by the BAS to compare the performance of the existing and new systems. This analysis will help them devise a strategy for future equipment replacements in alignment with their long-term decarbonization project goals.

Springbank completed the project successfully and is ready to provide additional support when called upon, just as trusted partners should.

“Our team always welcomes fresh challenges that help our customers save money and reduce their environmental impact. However, our real satisfaction comes from building new trusted relationships that help propel our industry forward toward better environmental stewardship.”
